보나르는 연인이나 부부관계에서 최대치를 끌어낸 예술가의 전형이다. 다른 사람들이 보기엔 비극적이었을지 몰라도 결국 이런 관계에선 본인들 외엔 아무도 그 내막을 알 수 없다. 우리가 알 수 있는 건 단지 보나르가 마르트와 함께 살면서 생산적이었다는 사실, 그리고 보나르가 단순히 공처가나 피해자가 아니었다는 사실이다. 그는 마르트의 단점들을 수용했고 마르트의 증상은 갈수록 나빠졌지만 보나르는 그녀로부터 원하는 것을 얻었다. 어쩌면 예술가 특유의 무정함이 작용했는지도 모른다.
